How to hear a Mandarin tone pair?

A search for a Mandarin tone pair piles two jobs onto one phrase. One job is to hear which of two sounds you heard. The other is to say a two-syllable word until it is perfect. This page takes the hearing job.

Naming the four tones is a different note. Saying a line twice is the sentence bank. A green check is still not a listener. This page does not host a recording of ours.

A pair on this page is two sounds

A Mandarin tone pair, on this page, is two sounds that differ by the tone mark. The rest of the syllable stays put. You hear one of them. You write down which one.

The ISO 7098 romanization page hosted by the Ministry of Education says: “每个汉字代表一个音节，每个音节有四个声调，也可以没有声调。” Each Chinese character stands for a syllable. Each syllable has four tones, or it can have none. Two marks on the same letters are two meanings. That is enough to make a pair.

The sentence bank already writes one such pair as a speaking trap. The as-written line 请问 / qǐng wèn keeps 问 in fourth tone. The one-tone trap is qǐng wén: only 问 has moved, from fourth to second. Those two strings differ by the mark. On this page they are something to hear, not something to record yet.

The 20-cell chart is a speaking syllabus

Search results for Mandarin tone pairs often hand you a grid of two-syllable words and a prompt to repeat them.

The Hacking Chinese guide to Mandarin tones says: “A tone pair is simply a combination of two tones, usually in a two-syllable word.” The same section counts “20 possible combinations of tones (the neutral tone can only appear on the second syllable of a word), and therefore 20 tone pairs to learn.” The method on that page is to learn one word for each pair so you can “say that single word correctly every time.”

That 20 is a count on that page. The clause about the unmarked tone sitting only in second place is the counting rule that page uses. It is not a sentence on the ISO 7098 page we read. This page will not print those twenty words, and it will not ask you to say them to perfection. Speaking a line twice stays on the sentence bank.

Hearing is a button

A published listening drill asked people to identify a tone without repeating it first.

In Wang, Spence, Jongman, and Sereno (1999), eight American learners sat through eight sessions. The stimuli were “real monosyllabic Mandarin words presented in isolation.” The four tones were trained pairwise. The trainees’ task was two alternative forced-choice identification: they indicated a response by pushing buttons labeled 1 to 4. Immediate feedback followed each stimulus, and the talker repeated both tones in that pair. Identification scores for those eight trainees moved from 69 percent correct on the pretest to 90 percent on the post-test, a 21 percent increase in that study. This page does not rerun those eight sessions. It borrows the shape of the job: hear which one, then write it down.

Those laboratory pairs were two tone categories on isolated syllables. They are not the twenty two-syllable words on the Hacking Chinese chart. The search word covers both. This page keeps them apart.

How to hear one pair without our audio

You do not need a recording hosted here in order to hear a Mandarin tone pair. You need two sounds that differ by the mark, and a way to write down which one arrived.

1. Pick two items that differ only by the tone mark. A person can say them. A recording you already have can say them. The sentence bank already writes 请问 as qǐng wèn and as the one-tone trap qǐng wén.
2. Hear one of them. Write down which one you heard. Do not speak yet.
3. If you want a second take, hear the other item. Compare the two notes. The work on this page stops there.

When the job becomes a line you can say twice, open the sentence bank. This page does not score you.

Labels and green checks wait

Naming the four tones in Mandarin is still what are the four tones in Mandarin. That note does not make you a listener.

A speaking-app mark is still what a Chinese tone checker is actually measuring. A green check is not a person hearing the pair. This page does not rank apps. It does not host a recording.

What waits until another page

The pinyin primer remains unwritten. A contrast recorded by this site remains unwritten too. Hearing one pair does not stand in for either.

What this page will not tell you

It will not hand you a twenty-word list. It will not publish a daily timetable. It will not rank a tone-pair app. Hear one pair. If you then need a line you can say twice, open one line in the sentence bank. If you are at zero, the starting path is how to start learning Chinese.
