Should I learn Chinese characters?

The search names characters. Official pages already split reading them from writing them. Neither is the spoken line this site starts with.

Written October 1, 2026. This page does not host a recording of ours, and it does not print a character table.

The search is should I learn Chinese characters. That phrase looks like a single job. Official pages already split reading a character from writing it by hand. A spoken line sits on another page.

A chart that asks you to finish a character list before you speak is asking for a miniature syllabus. A rule that you must never look at a character is the other extreme. This page measures the split. It does not host a table or a recording.

The search names more than one job

Chinese characters, on this page, are how Mandarin is written. The note on what is pinyin already cites ISO 7098: each Chinese character stands for a syllable. That is a writing fact. It does not turn a character list into a speaking course.

A search that asks whether to learn Chinese characters is often asking whether speech has to wait. It does not. The sentence bank already has a line you can say twice. This page will not reprint that line as a character drill.

Reading them is not writing them

Beginner pages often treat “learn characters” as handwriting from day one. That is a teaching habit. It is not what the HSK Level 1 outline we read asks the candidate to do.

The current HSK Level 1 outline hosted by CTI says: “HSK(一级)共 40 题,分听力、阅读两部分。” That paper has forty items. They sit in listening and reading. The same outline says: “试卷上的试题都加拼音。” Pinyin is printed on the questions. The score report names listening, reading, and a total. It does not name a writing score.

Characters still appear on that paper. This page will not pretend they vanish. What the outline does not do is ask the candidate to produce a character from memory for a writing score.

The current HSK Level 3 outline is a different paper. It says: “HSK(三级)共 80 题,分听力、阅读、书写三部分。” The second writing part asks the candidate to write the correct character in a blank: “每题提供一个带空格的句子,要求考生在空格上写正确的汉字。” Handwriting is a real exam task on that outline. It is not the unlock for a spoken line.

Three thousand is a scale

A Center for Language Education and Cooperation official, answering questions for China’s Ministry of Education about the 2021 Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards (GF0025-2021), said: “《标准》以音节(1110个)、汉字(3000个)、词汇(11092个)、语法(572条)四种语言基本要素构成“四维基准”,以言语交际能力、话题任务内容、语言量化指标形成三个评价维度,以中文听、说、读、写、译作为五项语言技能,准确标定学习者的中文水平。” Those 3,000 characters sit beside 1,110 syllables, 11,092 words, and 572 grammar items. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating are named as five skills. This page will not turn that character benchmark into a first-week spoken line.

The same answers say the Standards will guide a later HSK upgrade, while the existing six levels stay stable first: “《标准》出台后,HSK将依据《标准》进行优化升级,在保证原有六个级别稳定性的基础上,细化调整为三等九级。” The HSK 1 and HSK 3 outlines cited above are still those six-level papers. This page will not blend the 3,000-character benchmark into those word counts.

The Ministry release dated 31 March 2021 names the same four-element benchmark and a 1 July 2021 start. This site did not extract the attached character table for this note.

Speech still has its own page

Finishing a character chart is not how this site starts. If you are at zero, the starting path is how to start learning Chinese. Open the sentence bank when the job in front of you is a line a person can hear. After you can say it, look at how that line is written. This page will not publish a daily character quota.

The hardness note already keeps writing off the current State speaking-and-listening hours. This page will not invent a share of those hours. It does not rank a character app.

What waits until another page

A pick between simplified and traditional characters is still a later note. A handwriting course is still a later note. This site has not extracted the 2021 standard’s character table. Until that file is read here, this page will not print a list.

What this page will not tell you

It will not hand you a daily character timetable. It will not pick a script. It will not rank a character app. Open one line in the sentence bank. Say it. Then look at how that line is written.

Questions that still sit on the table

Should I learn Chinese characters?

Yes as a reading job. It is not week one's spoken line.

Should I learn pinyin or characters first?

Week one on this site is still one spoken line, written in pinyin with tone marks. What pinyin is is the note on what is pinyin. The character job is this page. Open how to start learning Chinese if you are at zero.

How many Chinese characters do I need?

A 2021 Q&A this site cites names 3,000 characters as one of four benchmarks, beside syllables, words, and grammar. The current HSK Level 1 outline is for candidates who have mastered 150 of the most commonly used words and related grammar knowledge, on a listening-and-reading paper with pinyin printed on the questions. This page will not pick a blog count and call it that standard. If the job is a line you can say twice, open the sentence bank.

Do I need to handwrite Chinese characters?

Handwriting is a scored task on the current HSK 3 outline we read. The HSK 1 outline we read has no writing paper. This page will not turn either fact into a law that beginners must write by hand, or a law that they must never.

What is the best app for learning Chinese characters?

This page does not rank apps.
