Should I learn Chinese alone, in a course, or with a teacher is a search for a winning format. The search wants one of those three to beat the other two.
This page names three jobs instead. Self-study is the pile. A course is a calendar other people keep. A teacher is a person who can hear a tone. Pay after you can say which job you actually need.
Three jobs, not a ranking
Alone, a course, and a teacher are three jobs on this page, not a league table.
Self-study is the work you can do with what you already opened. A structured course is a syllabus and a meeting time that continue when your motivation dips. A teacher is a listener who can stop a tone before it hardens. Those are different sticks. This page does not rank the platforms that sell them.
Restart lists often collapse the three into one winner, usually a private lesson or a hybrid plan. A hybrid plan is still three jobs glued together. Gluing them does not mint a fourth format on this page.
The State week already uses two of them
The current U.S. State Department language-training page describes a typical week as “23 hours per week in class and 17 hours of self-study.” The same page lists Category IV as “88 weeks (2200 class hours)”, aimed at “an integrated score of 3 (Speaking + Listening) on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.”
Those 2,200 class hours to an ILR speaking-and-listening 3 already sit next to self-study on that classroom track. The official week is not a binary. The hours note already names that denominator. This page does not turn the diplomat row into an evening tutor count.
A green check is not the teacher’s job
A speaking-app score is not a listener hearing the right tones.
That gap is the research note on what a Chinese tone checker is actually measuring. An app can be self-study equipment. It does not become a teacher because the mark turned green. This page does not test a named app, and it does not rank one.
