How to improve Chinese listening?

Name which listening you mean. HSK 1 hears each item twice. HSK 4 hears it once. Neither paper is a podcast list.

Written October 1, 2026. The outlines named here already say how many times an item is heard. This page does not host audio.

The search is how to improve Chinese listening. The outline you sit for already says how many times you hear each item.

A podcast list is a different search. The current HSK Level 1 outline lets the candidate hear each listening item twice. The current HSK Level 4 outline lets the candidate hear it once. This page measures that split. It does not host a recording.

Name which listening you mean

Chinese listening, on this page, is connected speech you have to follow. Hearing which of two isolated sounds arrived is a different job from following a dialogue, and it already has a page: how to hear a Mandarin tone pair.

The sentence bank is still a line you say. After you can say it, you can hear it. The saying stays there. This page names the papers that already decided how many plays you get.

The paper already says how many times you hear it

People look for a slower recording when speech speeds up. The outlines we read do not print a playback speed. They print how many times the candidate hears the item.

The current HSK Level 1 outline hosted by CTI says, for the first listening part: “第一部分,共 5 题。每题听两次。每题都是一个短语,试卷上提供一张图片,考生根据听到的内容判断对错。” The next three listening parts each repeat “每题听两次。”

The current HSK Level 4 outline is a different paper. The first listening part says: “第一部分,共 10 题。每题听一次。” The second part, fifteen items, says: “第二部分,共 15 题。每题听一次。” The third part, twenty items, says: “第三部分,共 20 题。每题听一次。”

Twice is a paper rule. Once is a paper rule. Neither line tells you the speaker’s rate. This page will not invent a slow Level 1 and a street-speed Level 4.

Rate sits on a different stick

The Interagency Language Roundtable writes rate into the listening levels. The current ILR listening descriptions put Level 1 here: “Understands some spoken language during participatory listening, particularly if delivered at a slower rate than normal, with frequent repetitions or paraphrase.”

Level 3 is a different description. The main statement is “Able to understand formal and informal spoken language with accuracy on general social and professional topics and tasks.” The supporting line on rate is “Understands speech delivered at a normal rate with ease, but may have some difficulty with fast spoken language.”

Those sentences are not an HSK paper. How long a classroom track takes to an integrated speaking and listening 3 is already on how long does it take to learn Chinese. This page will not reprint that classroom total.

A line you can already say

If you are at zero, how to start learning Chinese is still one spoken line. Open the sentence bank. Say the line. Then hear it without looking at the pinyin.

That is one kind of listening. It is not HSK 4, and it is not ILR 3. This page will not print a daily minute table, and it will not rank a podcast.

What waits until another page

A ranked list of Chinese podcasts is still unwritten on this site. Audio of connected speech recorded here is still a later page. A HelloChinese case sits on the courses shelf when that page exists. This note does not host audio.

What this page will not tell you

It will not hand you a podcast ranking. It will not print a daily minute table. It will not call HSK 4 a native speaker’s rate. Open one line in the sentence bank. Say it. Then hear it without looking.

Questions that still sit on the table

How to improve Chinese listening?

Name which listening you mean.

Why is Chinese listening so hard?

The current HSK Level 1 outline lets the candidate hear each item twice. The current HSK Level 4 outline lets the candidate hear each item once. ILR Listening Level 1 describes some understanding during participatory listening, particularly if the speech is slower than normal, with frequent repetitions or paraphrase. ILR Listening Level 3 describes speech at a normal rate with ease, and some difficulty with fast spoken language. Those are different sticks.

How can I practice Chinese listening as a beginner?

If you are at zero, week one is still one spoken line. Open how to start learning Chinese. The current HSK Level 1 outline tells the candidate that each listening item is heard twice. The current HSK Level 4 outline tells the candidate that each listening item is heard once. After you can say a sentence-bank line, hear it without looking at the pinyin. Tone pairs stay on how to hear a Mandarin tone pair. This page does not print a daily minute table.

Do I need podcasts to improve Chinese listening?

No. A podcast can be one kind of connected speech. This page does not rank shows, and it does not make a podcast a law.

What is the best app for Chinese listening?

This page does not rank apps.
